HSPT Prep is daily HSPT practice for 8th graders applying to Catholic high schools, with progress reports for parents. It was built by a parent in this admissions cycle. Reporters can reach the founder at jason@hsptprep.app.
The founder
Jason Culbertson built hsptprep.app because he has an 8th grader applying to Catholic high schools this cycle, at East Bay schools that use the HSPT. He's an East Bay parent going through the same process as the families who use it, and he's available for interviews.
What HSPT Prep is
- Daily practice for the High School Placement Test (HSPT), covering all five sections: Verbal Skills, Quantitative Skills, Reading, Mathematics and Language.
- Students work one focused question at a time, with pacing tools and Coach help beside the question. Practice is short daily sessions built around the student's own results.
- An explanation comes right after every answer, and missed questions are organized by section and skill for review.
- Parents see completed work, accuracy trends, missed-question patterns and the next focus in one view.
- A full-length timed practice test with a countdown for each section, short breaks, saved attempts and a parent-friendly report. These are HSPT Prep questions, not official exams.
- HSPT Prep is not affiliated with Scholastic Testing Service, the publisher of the HSPT.
What's free
Free means $0, with no time limit:
- A free 25-question diagnostic at /practice-test: five questions from each section, about 15 minutes, with results by section. No account is needed to start. It's a baseline, not a score prediction.
- One full timed practice test.
- One timed mini test.
- 25 practice questions a day.
Pricing
- Free: $0 forever (see above).
- Weekly: $4.99 a week after 3 days free. Unlimited questions, unlimited timed and full tests, full mistake review and parent progress insights. Cancel any time.
- Season Pass: $39, one payment for nine months of access. No subscription to cancel.
Current plan details are always on the pricing page.
Free school-code program
Catholic K-8 schools can get a free school code for their families. Families with a code get 30 days of HSPT practice with no credit card, and parents can track their child's progress. Schools and counselors can learn more on the for schools page.
HSPT test dates
There's no national HSPT date. Each Catholic high school, or in some places the diocese, sets its own sitting, usually between mid-November and mid-January of 8th grade. A few current-cycle examples, each from the school's or the diocese's own source:
- Diocese of Oakland (East Bay): Saturday, January 9, 2027 (STS Oakland registration). Registration is open through January 6, 2027.
- St. Ignatius College Prep, San Francisco: Saturday, December 5, 2026 (siprep.org). Application deadline November 16, 2026.
- Archdiocese of Chicago: Saturday, December 5, 2026, the first Saturday in December (catholichighschoolchicago.org). Students take the exam once, at one school.
- Archdiocese of Baltimore: November 14–21, 2026 (STS Baltimore registration).
- Archdiocese of Cincinnati: Saturday, November 21, 2026 (STS Cincinnati registration).
- Archdiocese of Los Angeles: January 2027, with dates set by each high school (archdiocesan handbook).
The full, sourced list with check dates is on our HSPT test dates page. Please confirm any date with the school before publishing it.
