What this diagnostic tells you

The HSPT surprises strong students because two of its five sections — Verbal Skills and Quantitative Skills — use question types most middle schools never teach: analogies, logic statements, number series, and quantitative comparisons. A 25-question sample is enough to show which sections need work, which is the decision that actually matters 8–12 weeks before test day. From there, the 8-week study plan lays out the schedule, and What is the HSPT? explains the full test: ~298 questions, about 2.5 hours, no guessing penalty, taken once in 8th grade.

How scoring works on the real test

Correct answers convert to national percentile ranks from 1 to 99 — and at many Catholic high schools, the composite percentile also drives merit scholarships. The 75th percentile is competitive at most schools; many scholarship ranges begin between the 85th and 95th. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so students should answer every question.
