The HSPT surprises strong students because two of its five sections — Verbal Skills and Quantitative Skills — use question types most middle schools never teach: analogies, logic statements, number series, and quantitative comparisons. How scoring works on the real test
Correct answers convert to national percentile ranks from 1 to 99 — and at many Catholic high schools, the composite percentile also drives merit scholarships. The 75th percentile is competitive at most schools; many scholarship ranges begin between the 85th and 95th. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so students should answer every question.
