How do students write a Catholic high school activities or service essay?
Choose one story. Leave the résumé on the activities form.Many Catholic high school applications ask what the student does after school — activities, leadership, or service. The prompt is not national. Ask each school for this cycle’s questions. We cover process and structure only. We do not invent sample essays or paste another school’s wording.
The short answer
- Pick one activity or one service role the student can describe without notes.
- Show a scene (what they did on a real day), then what they still do because of it.
- Hours and titles are optional. Consistency and honesty beat a long list.

How to choose the story
- List what the student actually did this year. Include family responsibility if that is the real load.
- Star the item they can talk about for two minutes without a parent prompt.
- Drop anything added only to look well-rounded.
- Check the school’s word limit. One scene plus one reflection usually fits; five activities do not.
A structure that stays specific
- Open in the middle of a practice, shift, rehearsal, or service task — not “I am passionate about.”
- Middle is what the student did when it was inconvenient (a missed ride, a hard teammate, a boring hour).
- Close is one habit they would bring to high school — not a claim that they will run every club.

Frequently asked questions
Should the essay list every activity?
No. The activities form, if the school has one, is the list. The essay is usually one story that shows how the student shows up. A catalog of clubs reads like a second résumé and uses up the word limit.
Is service required to write this type of essay?
Only if that school’s current prompt asks for service. Many forms accept sports, music, family jobs, or school activities. Do not invent service hours. Ask admissions if the wording is unclear.
What if the most important activity is recent or informal?
Recent and informal can be stronger than a titled role the student barely remembers. The test is whether a reader can see a specific person doing a specific thing — babysitting a sibling on weeknights counts if it is the true story.
