When do Catholic high schools require the HSPT vs ISEE?
Most Catholic high schools in the United States require the HSPT. The ISEE is the usual exam at independent (non-religious) private schools. A Catholic school can still choose ISEE, SSAT, TACHS, or no entrance exam. The school list decides the test — not a national Catholic rule.
The short answer
- Default for Catholic high schools: HSPT.
- NYC Catholic high schools: typically TACHS, not HSPT.

How to decide from the school list
Write down every high school on the list. Next to each name, copy the entrance exam from that school’s own admissions page. If our verified school pages already cite a current-cycle sitting, use that page — then still confirm with the office, because policies change by year. We do not invent test days.

What Catholic affiliation does not prove
A school can be Catholic and still skip the HSPT. Some use a school-written exam. Some waive testing. Some accept ISEE or SSAT as an alternate. When would a Catholic school require the ISEE instead?
Some Catholic or independent-Catholic schools accept the ISEE (or SSAT) instead of, or in addition to, the HSPT — especially in mixed metro markets. That is a school policy, not a national rule. If the admissions page lists ISEE, prep for ISEE. If it lists HSPT, prep for HSPT.
What do New York City Catholic schools use?
New York City Catholic high schools typically use the TACHS, not the HSPT. Do not assume an HSPT sitting will satisfy a TACHS school. Confirm on that school’s admissions page.
Can one student take both the HSPT and the ISEE?
Yes. The tests are run by different organizations. Families with both Catholic HSPT schools and independent ISEE schools on the same list often sit both. Schedule the HSPT carefully: most Catholic schools treat it as one sitting.
