HSPT Basics

How long is the HSPT, and what is the timing by section?

Plan on about 2.5 hours at the testing school for the standard STS battery: roughly 298 questions and about 2 hours 20 minutes of timed sections, plus instructions. The clock is tight by design. Optional sections or an essay, if the school adds them, make the morning longer. Confirm the local schedule with the school — we do not invent a start time.

Standard STS High School Placement Test battery. A school may add optional STS sections (for example Science or Catholic Religion) or its own writing sample. Ask the testing school what will be on the desk that day.

Why the pace surprises strong students

Verbal Skills is about 16 seconds per question. The skills sections use formats — analogies, number series, logic — that most 8th-grade classes never drill. Content knowledge is not enough if the student has never practiced the clock. That is the whole product job at HSPT Prep: built by a parent in this admissions cycle, not affiliated with STS, using the real section names and a short daily routine.

What each section measures is on What is the HSPT? and the five section explainers. Timing for when to start prep is a different question: when to start HSPT prep.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the HSPT in total?

The standard STS High School Placement Test battery is about 298 multiple-choice questions and about 2 hours 20 minutes of section time. With instructions, breaks, and any optional school-added section, families should plan on about 2.5 hours or more at the site. Confirm the local schedule with the testing school.

How much time is each HSPT section?

On the standard STS form, Verbal Skills is 60 questions in 16 minutes, Quantitative Skills is 52 questions in 30 minutes, Reading is 62 questions in 25 minutes, Mathematics is 64 questions in 45 minutes, and Language is 60 questions in 25 minutes. A school can add optional STS sections or an essay.

Is there a guessing penalty on the HSPT?

No. Only correct answers count. Students should answer every question, including items they mark for a later look if time remains.

Does extended time change the clock?

Only if the testing school and STS approve an accommodation. That is a local documentation process, not an automatic extra clock. See HSPT accommodations for IEP and 504 students.
