How HSPT percentiles work

The percentile is the number most parents remember. It tells you how your child performed compared with other HSPT test takers nationally, not how many questions they answered correctly.

Raw score, scaled score, percentile: what changes?

The HSPT starts with raw score, meaning how many questions your child got right. That result is converted into a scaled score, and the scaled score is then mapped to a national percentile rank. The percentile is what families usually use because it is the easiest way to compare performance.

Why percentiles matter more than the raw number

Raw score by itself does not tell you whether a result is strong in the national pool. Percentile does. That is also why two students with what sounds like a similar number of correct answers may not land in the same place once scaling is applied.

How parents should use the report

• Use composite percentile to judge overall competitiveness.
• Use section percentiles to decide what to study next.
• Use school context to decide whether the result is strong enough for your list.
