Parent Role

How can parents help with HSPT prep without teaching content?

Protect a short daily slot, read section reports, and keep the temperature low. You do not need to reteach analogies or algebra. HSPT question types are not the middle-school curriculum, and a parent crash course the week of the test usually adds stress, not points.

The short answer

  • Do: put 20 minutes on the calendar, start the first session, watch weekly section trends.
  • Do: handle logistics — registration, test-day packing, sleep.
  • Don’t: grade every item, lecture after a miss, or talk scholarships at dinner.

Why teaching it yourself often backfires

Verbal Skills and Quantitative Skills use formats most parents never saw in school. Walking through one analogy incorrectly teaches the wrong habit. The 8th-grader prep plan is diagnose, then short daily work in the real format — not a parent syllabus. HSPT Prep exists so the product, not the kitchen table, does the explanations. Jason Culbertson built it as a parent in this cycle; see About HSPT Prep. Not affiliated with STS.

The parent checklist that actually helps

  1. Confirm the exam is the HSPT on each school’s page. If it is ISEE, do not run HSPT drills as the only prep.
  2. Get one baseline from the free 25-question HSPT practice test. Treat it as data.
  3. Keep the same time of day. Sports and homework already compete; a floating plan dies.
  4. Ask “which section felt slow?” not “what did you get?”
  5. If anxiety is the issue, use the anxiety guide, not more worksheets.

Frequently asked questions

Should I sit with my 8th grader during HSPT practice?

Not as a tutor. Sit nearby for the first session if they need help starting the app, then leave the questions to them. Hovering and correcting turns practice into a second class.

What if I do not remember middle-school math?

You do not need to. The parent job is consistency and interpretation of section reports. Content explanations belong in the practice product or a tutor, not a late-night whiteboard session you are not prepared to run.

How do I know practice is working without grading papers?

Watch section-level progress over weeks, not one night’s score. HSPT Prep’s weekly parent view is built for that. A one-sitting diagnostic is a baseline, not a daily report card.
