Test Day

What should students bring on HSPT test day?

Bring several #2 pencils and the confirmation the testing school sent.Leave the calculator, phone, and study notes at home. Everything else — photo ID, snack, watch, arrival time — is a local rule. Copy it from that school’s admissions or test-day page. We do not invent a national packing list.

The short answer

  • Usually yes: #2 pencils, eraser, school registration or admission ticket.
  • Usually no: calculator, phone, smartwatch, notes, extra paper.
  • Ask the school: photo ID, snack/water, analog watch, what time doors open.

What is consistent about the HSPT

The High School Placement Test is a paper multiple-choice battery from Scholastic Testing Service. Students bubble answers. There is no guessing penalty, so they should answer every question. HSPT Prep is not affiliated with STS; we describe the format parents actually meet on campus. See who writes these guides.

Section length is on how long the HSPT is. If illness or weather knocks out the sitting, read what if we miss the HSPT date — that is a make-up conversation with the school, not a retake plan.

The night-before parent job

A short free 25-question HSPT practice testin the weeks before test day is enough to make the formats familiar. It is not a substitute for the school’s own instructions.

Frequently asked questions

Can students use a calculator on the HSPT?

No. The standard HSPT mathematics and quantitative sections are taken without a calculator. Do not pack one unless the school’s accommodations letter explicitly says otherwise.

Do students need a photo ID?

Some testing schools ask for a student ID or other identification; others check students in from a registration list. Use the confirmation email or admissions page for that sitting. If it is unpublished, call the school.

What if we forget something?

Arrive early and ask the proctor or admissions desk. A missing pencil is usually fixable on site. A missing registration or late arrival is a school-policy problem — contact the office the same morning if you are delayed.
