Basic Skills
The HSPT Reading section, explained for parents
How well a student understands, remembers, and reasons from written passages.
The short answer
The challenge is often pace rather than basic comprehension. Students need to separate what the passage states from an answer that merely sounds reasonable.
What your child will see
- Main idea and purpose
- Important details
- Logical inferences
- Vocabulary in context
How to prepare effectively
- Practice locating evidence for every answer.
- Summarize the main idea before looking at the choices.
- Use surrounding sentences to determine vocabulary in context.
How this score fits into the HSPT
Reading combines with Reading, Mathematics, and Language as applicable to form the Total Basic Skills score. All five main subtests contribute to the Battery Composite. Schools may interpret section scores differently, so confirm admissions and placement policies with each school.
Content descriptions follow the official Scholastic Testing Service HSPT overview. HSPT Prep is not affiliated with Scholastic Testing Service.
